Listening for God : Contemporary Literature and the Life of Faith Volume 2 (Leader Guide)
Published in Paperback by Augsburg Fortress Publishers (March, 1996)
Authors: Paula J. Carlson and Peter S. Hawkins
Average review score:

A wonderful resource for discussion groups
Paula Carlson and Peter Hawkins have over the past several years pulled together short stories and a few essays, three volumes in all, from contemporary authors in which faith concerns of all types are raised. The authors are first-rate and include the well known--John Updike, Flannery O'Connor, Gail Godwin, John Cheever and others--to lesser known authors like Tillie Olsen and Tess Gallgher. Each of the volumes includes a leader's guide, and volumes 1 and 2 include videos with interviews of the authors or of people who knew the author.

These are excellent volumes for discussion groups that bring out the multitude of issues, problems, life crises that each of has or will face. The relationship to faith and religion are sometimes clear, sometimes not so obvious, but all present situations of interest and, often, deep concern, for individuals. Having facilitated two of this series, the atmosphere provided by the stories and their general literary excellence leads easily into discussions where people can reflect anew on the importance of grace and the mystery of God in our lives

Loved this collection of readings.
This is a very moving collection of essays for anyone interested in how religious thought affects the writings of authors. I couldn't put the book down and recommend it for discussion groups as well.

Mordecai of Monterey
Published in Paperback by City Miner Books (April, 1985)
Authors: Keith Abbott, Mike Helm, and interior-Anne Hawkins cover-Tom Clark
Average review score:

wonderful trip!
Mordecai polishes his translations of Chinese poetry, moves the junk & households of other Californians, and stays on various back porches & Big Sur getaways finding love and friendship in the 1970's of our memories. Along the way, we ourselves grow to love and appreciate the joys of these marginal characters, the heirs of Steinbeck's Mack and the boys of CANNERY ROW. A magical book!

A witty portrayal of bohemian life in Big Sur 1970s
Mordecai is a zen/bohemian who interacts with the entire social structure of the Big Sur and Monterey area through the moving and hauling business that he runs along with his irrepressible sidekick Buck. Between them they get into more trouble than his good luck (melanoia- the opposite of paranoia))can stand. A comic look at both the bohemian and yuppie foibles of the early 1970s.

Pat the Cat & Friends Read Along Box Set
Published in Paperback by DK Publishing (01 September, 2001)
Authors: Jacqui Hawkins and Colin &. Jacqui Hawkins
Average review score:

Your child will love these books
I just started reading these books to my daughter and she loves them. The silly rhymes make her smile and laugh and she's only 3 months old! I can't wait until she's reading them herself.

Each of the books tells a short story and does it in a way that is very entertaining. I wish DK would print more Pat the Cat books. I'd love to introduce my daughter to more of Pat's friends.

Silly Reading Fun
Colin and Jacqui Hawkins created Pat the Cat to help their daughter learn to read. The rhyming split pages helped her recognize new words simply by changing a single letter as she turned each page. They then wrote Jen the Hen, Mig the Pig, Tog the Dog and Zug the Bug.

These stories are filled with rhyming humor and have been compared to Dr. Seuss, which is why I think I like them so much. For the first time, the five books have been brought together in a "starter pack" so your child can start on their road to reading.

The books are really hilarious and will make your children laugh out loud. Pat the Cat is my absolute favorite. He says: "Every cat should wear a hat." on the cover and then you open the book and find the last page has his picture and the word PAT. Then on all the shorter pages, you have c, f, m, h, b, r, s and n and line up with the AT so each page makes a different word as in cat, fat, mat, hat, bat, rat, sat, Nat.

The story is silly and starts with: "Do you know Pat the cat? Your child can then sound out the word C-A-T. Turn the page and you will find a very fat cat saying: "Fat, I'm not Fat!" Two little caterpillars comment on everything on each page.

All sorts or animals including Nat the Rat and Tat the Bat climb into his hat. Then Pat tries to get into his hat and the caterpillars have something to say.

Jen the Hen teaches children how to send a letter to a friend. Mig the Pig likes to wear a bright wig and also eats "fig" pie. Tog the Dog likes to Jog and so he gets into all sorts of trouble on his run through the pages. Very creative!

Zug the Bug goes fishing with a dog names Pug and then they glug down milk from a jug. The slug is quite the character in this book and the two caterpillars are just hilarious.

This set will teach children that reading is fun and they will soon be asking to read more books. This is a lovely introduction to reading, with great illustrations.

Reference Grammar of Modern Italian
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 March, 2000)
Authors: Martin Maiden, Cecilia Robustelli, Cecelia Robustelli, and Roger Hawkins
Average review score:

The last word on Italian grammar in English
This is a rigorous grammar text using a fair amount of linguistics lingo (all of which is defined). Both this book and Anna Proudfoot's Modern Italian Grammar (which complements Maiden) should be in the library of any serious student of Italian. If you need more than these two books provide, you'll have to find it written in Italian, not in English. Some of Maiden's book (or a lot) will be over your head, but it's a great reference to grow into.

The Best Grammar Yet Published for Americans
This book is an excellent resource. It covers the essentials and it helps the user to answer the questions: "How do I say..." and "How do I form..." which most American reference texts published in the States do not do--in a way that is systematic and logical. The author, Robert Maiden, is a Professor of Romance Linguistics at Oxford--that says it in a "nut shell!" Whenever I've needed a good English-Italian grammar reference or book, I've always had to rely on the British scholars and publishers. Sorry to say this but the American market is generally saturated with fluff and gloss. This reference book is an excellent alternative to the "fast buck" junk on the market and makes a good companion book to Italiano Vivo, by Giorgio Milesi, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons, LTD, UK. A highly recommend it.

Sam Hawkins Celebrates Cross Stitch
Published in Hardcover by David & Charles (September, 2000)
Author: Sam Hawkins
Average review score:

Sam Does It Again
Sam Hawkins books are always a must have to me. I cross stitch a lot as I don't get out too much, and find his books composed with care. They inspire you to add and subtract bits so they ' live' for ever as I have not found one I could not return to and get another idea from. Well laid out in easy to read formatt. Clearly explained from cover to cover. Unusuall designs also included. An all round good buy.

Answers the question what to do with cross stitch projects.
This is a great book. There are over 150 designs for all sorts of occasions. The designs are charted in color and are simple to use. For the most part the designs are small enough to stitch out in an afternoon if you are quick. The designs are great but even greater is the variety of ways the author shows you to use the designs. Two of the unsual uses were on the heads of stick pins for bulletin boards and designs sewn on gloves. I really am impressed with this book.

A Small, Good Thing: Stories of Children with HIV and Those Who Care for Them
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (August, 2000)
Author: Anne Hunsaker Hawkins
Average review score:

Amazing Book
As a parent of 3 children who are Hiv positive I was able to relate to much in this book. Not only was it informative, but I felt as I could reach out and touch these families through my readings. Anyone who has been infected or affected by Hiv should read this book. I am looking forward to reading more books by Ms Anne Hinsaker Hawkins.

A NEEDED AND IMPORTANT BOOK!
Anne Hawkins has given us an exceptionally compassionate and detailed portrayal of children with HIV and the variety of (good and poor) caretakers in their lives. Her story is also a tribute to a caring physician and his staff who care for these children. Woven throughout is important medical and psychosocial information for those interested in understanding the full situation these children face.

Each of the six stories is beautifully told and pulls at the reader's empathy and outrage; children should not have to face these circumstances, but their caretakers are often trapped and needy too.

The plight of children with HIV is just beginning to be spoken about in many circles. Hawkins' book will be an enormous help to those conversations.

Spirits of the Water
Published in Paperback by Holmes Pub Group (November, 2001)
Author: Jaq D. Hawkins
Average review score:

The best in the series!
I have all of the books in this series and have also had the fortune to attend a talk by the author herself, even managed to get the book signed!! From reading this book you get the impression that she has a special affinity with Water, and it shows because this is by far the strongest book in the series. The personal insights into the nature of water and its different manifestations has helped me develop my bond with this element tenfold.

Whereas other books tend to focus on the positive side of elementals, this books deals with the element in all its guises, including the more sinister spirits of murky stagnant water, the drawing allure of water to pull one down into its surface etc.

Although I'm not unfamiliar with the methods of creating and sustaining thoughtforms, the personal insights and thoughts of another on the subject has led to me being a bit more experimental in the process. There is also material on interacting with Water spirits, divination with Water, Water rituals and Water folk magic. Again, although one might already be au fait with the techniques, this is exactly the kind of material that prevents one from getting tired and staid in technique. With so many books being of a shallow & trite nature, it makes a pleasent change to read a book that thought has gone into. It is also a pleasure to read a book by someone who obviously knows what they are doing with magic and has considerable experience, something reflected on the more practical nature of her suggestions.

Completely engrossing
I've been following this series and this is the best yet! It has historic information as well as some very intense spell working advice. This one has changed my awareness of the world around me forever. I think this author gets better and better with every book she writes, and will be keeping an eye out for anything new from her!

Prov 11:1, balanced warfare
I have purchased and read many books on this subject, but none have come close to the detail and balance of this book. It covers a range of topics that most warfare books leave out. After reading this book from cover to cover, there should be no reason why anyone cannot live a victorious, well balanced, well educated, christian life.

It will change your life you will never be the same!
This book has the teaching and tools that will take you from being a defeated christian to a victorious one. This teaching will show you how to be on the "offensive" opposed to the "deffensive". Your eyes will be opened and you will never look at things in the natural the same again. Being Armed for the Spiritual Battle will be your goal and fighting the good fight will never be taken lightly ever again!
